Stephany Welch

Stephany Welch 38, of highway 76 east Clayton, Georgia., died June 11, 2019 at her sister’s home in Toccoa, GA., surrounded by her loving friends and family.

Born in Clayton Georgia November 2, 1980 she was the daughter of Theresa Moses and step-mother Elaine Welch and the late Steve welch. She worked in the Food Industry and was a member of Carver’s Chapel Baptist Church.

She is survived by besides her mother and step-mother by one son, Ethan Scott of Clayton, GA., two daughters, Zoe Welch and Maddison Welch of Clayton, GA., one brother, Steven Welch of Toccoa, GA., three sisters, Nichole Rice of Toccoa, GA., Misty Welch of Summersville, GA., and Greta Shackleford of Habersham County. Several nephews, nieces and cousins also survive.

A memorial service will be held at Carver’s Chapel Baptist Church Saturday June 15, 2019 at 4:00 P.M. with Rev. Bryan Alexander officiating.

Charlotte Irene Jones (Ramey)

Charlotte Irene Ramey Jones, 75, of Shadyside Drive Clayton, Georgia., died Monday June 10, 2019 at her residence. She was the widow of Verlon Jones.

Born in Rabun County Georgia., she was the daughter of the late Clayton M. Ramey and Irene Smith Ramey she was a self employed house keeper and was a member of the Chechero Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death, besides her parents, and husband by brothers-in-law Olan Carver and Allan Childers and is survived by two brothers, Clifton Ramey (Ouida) of Clayton, GA., and Harold Dennis (Elizabeth) of Tiger, GA., three sisters, Vivian Carver of Clayton, GA., Velma Childers of Clayton, GA., and Marsha Woods (Ralph) of Clayton, GA., several nephews, nieces and cousins also survive.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday June 12, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Carver officiating. Burial will follow at the Dixon Cemetery in the Chechero Community.

Mildred Allison Rogers

Mildred Allison Rogers, 88, of the Chechero Community, Clayton, GA, died Wednesday June 5, 2019 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Mildred was born in Towns County, GA, March 2, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Elva Matheson Allison and had spent her life in Rabun County. Mildred was a homemaker, a merchant in the grocery store business, dealt in real estate and was a friend to her community. She was a member of Clayton Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Ideal Sunday School class of Clayton Baptist Church.

Mildred was thrice married; first to the late Floyd Rogers then to the late Harold Mincemeyer, and then to the late James D. (Red) Kelley. Besides her husbands and parents she was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene Allison, Paul Allison, and Doyle Allison and also a sister, Ina Kozeski. She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Gerschefski of Clayton, GA, a brother, John Allison, of Young Harris, GA and a sister, Louise Sheffield Stancil of Clayton, GA.

Funeral services will be at 3:00pm, Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the Eastside Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with Rev. Cliff Lewis and Layman Lloyd Hunter officiating. Burial will be at 5:30pm Sunday, in Laurel Hill Cemetery at 2615 Georgia Highway 17, Young Harris, GA 30582. Floyd Calvin Chastain

Calvin Floyd Chastain, 75, of the Hale Ridge Community Clayton, GA., died Tuesday June 4, 2019 at his home.

Born in Clyde, North Carolina., September 7, 1943 he was the son of the late James Luther (Luke) Chastain and Lucy Thomas Chastain. He had lived all of his life in Rabun County, Georgia. He was a retired carpenter and was of the Baptist Faith.

Calvin was preceded in death by his wife Jo Ann Carver Chastain and by two brothers, Joe Chastain and Ned Chastain and is survived by one son, Wayne Chastain (Amanda) of Clayton, GA., one step son, Jeffrey Carver of Orlando, FL. Three brothers, Leroy Chastain (Carolyn), Max Chastain and Gary “Chub” Chastain all of Dillard, GA., three sisters, Linda Stewart (J.B.) of Otto, NC., Sue Owens of Dillard, GA., and Mary “Shorty” Billingsley and her husband Jack of Scaly Mtn. NC., two grandchildren, Michael and Alyshia and one great grandchild, Delilah also survive.

Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Weber (Prather)

Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Prather Weber, 92, of Clayton, GA., went to be with her Lord and Savior, Saturday May 25, 2019 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Bernadette Bleckley (Danny)., surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of Richard Weber, Sr.

Born in Miami, Florida., she was the daughter of the late Julius Raymond Prather and Ernestine Veronica Prather. She was a homemaker and was a member of the St. Helena Catholic Church for over 39 years.

She is survived by three sons, Richard Weber, Jr., (Linda) of Clermont, Fl., Michael Weber (Marion) of Clayton, GA., and Patrick Weber of Vero Beach, FL., five daughters, Denise Womack (Tom) of Dawsonville, GA., Bernadette Bleckley (Danny) of Clayton, GA., Jane Daniel (Clifton) of Dawsonville, GA., Susan Bramblett of Clayton, GA., and Amy Phillips (Tim) of Otto, NC., fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and several special nieces and nephews also survive.

The body has been cremated and a Celebration of Life Mass will be held at the St. Helena Catholic Church Clayton, GA., Saturday June 1, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. conducted by Father Pedro. The Entombment will follow at the St. Helena Catholic Church Columbarium. The family is at their respective residences.

Bessie Eller Turpin 83, of Turpin Street Tiger, Georgia died Thursday May 23, 2019 at her home. She was the widow of James P. Turpin.

Born May 9, 1936 she was the daughter of the late Benny and Rosa Mae Eller she was a homemaker and was Church of God Faith and Evangelist for over 60 years.

She was preceded in death, besides her parents, and husband by one brother, Robert Eller and three sisters, Esther Quilliams Joyce Galloway and Evelyn Conley and is survived by one son, Tim Kilby of Tiger, GA., two brothers, Clifton Eller of Clayton, GA., and Hansel Eller (Gloria) of Seneca, SC., two sisters, Jessie Shirley of Tiger, GA., and Helen Crunkleton (Jim) of Rabun Gap , GA., Four grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive.

Mrs Sanders was preceded in death by a Son, Ellis Edward Sanders Jr, by her Parents, Edwin and Ethel Atkins and by three sisters, Gengvieve Sanders, Thelma Robinson, and Margie Fuson and Survived by a son Jerry Sanders (Kelly) Lakemont ,Georgia. A daughter Shirley McNeil (Patrick) of Rochester Hills Indiana Three Sisters, Geneva Jackson of Pekin, Indiana, Frida Rainer of Wabasld Indiana and Fleta Garris of Birdseye, Indiana., Nine Grandchildren, eight Great Grandchildren And Six Great Great grandchildren also survive..

Eleanor Deal Law

APRIL 27, 1936 ~ MAY 15, 2019

Eleanor Deal Law, (83), of Clayton, Georgia, wife of Albert Keith Law, passed away at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia, on May 15, 2019.

The eldest daughter of Homer Deal and Ida Sheffield Deal of Clayton, Eleanor was born on April 27, 1936. After graduating from Rabun County high school, she enrolled at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, in 1953, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Illustration and Dress Design, having made the Dean’s List three times. In 1963, she enrolled in the Pre-Pharmacy curriculum at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon completion of that program in 1965 she enrolled at the Mercer University School of Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1968.

Following her graduation from Wesleyan she worked as an assistant buyer for the Lord and Taylor department store chain in New York City for six years, responsible for purchasing merchandise for seven of the company’s suburban stores. A strong believer in education, during her time living in New York City she also took courses at the prestigious Hunter College and the Phos Institute of Real Estate. In 1962, she became the buyer for Rich’s Department Store in Atlanta, Georgia, responsible for buying merchandise for the company as well as training employees and other managerial duties. Upon graduating from Mercer University School of Pharmacy, she returned to her hometown to become the pharmacist at Deal’s Drug Store, founded by her pharmacist father, where she also assumed all management duties until her retirement in 2007.

Eleanor was an active member in many local civic and professional organizations including the American Pharmaceutical Association, Georgia Pharmaceutical Association, Florida Pharmaceutical Association, National Association of Retail Druggists, Rabun County Chamber of Commerce, Clayton Merchant’s Association, the Woman’s Club of Clayton, Anita Roper Circle, the Clayton Baptist Church, Wesleyan Alumnae Association, the Mercer University Alumnae Association, and served as president of the Pilot Club of Clayton.

A strong believer of enriching the cultural experiences of the students of Rabun County, she served as a host family and regional representative for Youth for Understanding, a non-profit international educational organization that is one of the world’s oldest, largest, and most respected intercultural student exchange programs. She hosted YFU students from France, Finland, Colombia, Denmark, and Japan.

Quick to offer help to anyone who needed it, Eleanor was also noted for her ready smile, cheerful and caring personality, and energy. Such was her personality that even those who only briefly came to know her formed life-long friendships.

Eleanor is survived by her husband, Albert Keith Law, daughter Deborah Law Fairchild of Alpharetta, Georgia, and sister Evelyn Deal Kirby of Swainsboro, Georgia; three grandchildren, Matthew Fairchild of Alpharetta, Sean Fairchild of Savannah, Georgia, and Laura Fairchild Williamson of Hong Kong; and two great-grandchildren Ember Fairchild and Camden Fairchild both of Alpharetta, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 20, 2019 at 11:00 Am in Clayton Baptist Church with Dr. Jamie Archer and Rev. Joey Thompson presiding, Interment will follow in Rabun Memory Park Cemetery in Tiger, Ga. Visitation will take place at Beck Funeral Home on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

Karan B. Cathey

AUGUST 20, 1952 ~ MAY 14, 2019

Karan Belinda Cathey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 14. A lifelong Rabun County resident, Karan was the daughter of Ellis and Kate Cathey, late of Mountain City. She was also preceded in death by her older brother, Frank Cathey of Mountain City.

Karan is survived by her brothers, John and Dennis Cathey. John resides in Greenwood, South Carolina, with his wife Bernice. Dennis lives in Cornelia, Georgia, with his wife Vicki. Karan is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews who brought her much joy.

Karan was a graduate of Rabun County High School and owned and operated Karan’s Café and Catering in Rabun Gap for decades until declining health prevented her from doing so. Karan was renowned for her ability to create whatever her clients desired, whether “down home” cooking or an elegant wedding reception.

Karan loved Rabun County and loved taking care of people. She was the primary caregiver for her mother Kate Cathey during the last years of Kate’s life. She was a wonderful daughter, sister and friend.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 15 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Beck Funeral Home in Clayton. Services will be held on Thursday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Beck Funeral Home, with Rev. James Turpen officiating. Interment will follow at Rabun Memory Park.

Ida Webb

APRIL 6, 1934 ~ MAY 8, 2019

Ida Webb, age 85, of the Cannonwood Assisted Living facility, passed away peacefully with her daughter and family at her bedside on May 8th, 2019.

Ida was born on April 6th, 1934 to the late William and Polly (Watkins) Webb, from Otto, NC. She was the youngest of 12 siblings. She has one remaining sister, Omie Webb, 91, of Otto, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, 8 brothers, Lawrence, Truey, Lester, Joe, Grover, Lewis, Richard, and Lee Webb; two sisters, Lenora Munson and Bertie Crane.

Ida has one daughter, Melessa Alley (Michael) of Lakemont and one grandson, Parker Alley, also of Lakemont.

Visitation will be held at Beck Funeral Home on Friday May 10, 2019 from 6 – 8 pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday May 11, 2019 at 11:00 am with Rev. Madison McCrackin and Rev. Jeff Houston officiating. Burial will follow in the Joy Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ida’s memory to the Joy Baptist Church.

Lonnie Calvin Queen

FEBRUARY 6, 1936 ~ MAY 8, 2019

Calvin Lonnie Queen, 83, of Canon, Georgia, formerly of Mountain City, passed away May 8, 2019.

He was the son of the late J.D. Queen and late Mary Magdalene Chastain Queen. He began his career in the printing industry at the Clayton Tribune and Cross Printing. Calvin then moved to Atlanta and worked in the printing industry there until his retirement. He loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed being outdoors. In his younger years he enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle. He was a loving father and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, a brother, Bill Queen, preceded him in death.

Calvin is survived by one son, Scott Queen of Braselton, Georgia; two daughters Becky Queen of Braselton, Georgia, Sandra Queen of Rabun Gap, Georgia; one brother, Monroe Queen of Clayton, GA; two sister Lorene Sanders of Canon, Georgia, Bonnie Queen Dyson of Greencastle, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren also survive.

No service is planned at this time.

William Earle Chase

SEPTEMBER 27, 1940 ~ MAY 4, 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of William Earle Chase announces his sudden passing, on Saturday, May 4, 2019. Born in Washington, D.C., Bill grew up in Macon, Georgia at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth. He graduated with honors from Lanier High School with an ROTC rank of Captain. He graduated from Emory University, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, with a major in chemistry. He served 3 years in the United States Navy as an officer and served aboard several ships including the U.S.S. Muliphen. After the Navy, he began his career of more than 30 years with the Eastman Chemical Company. Following his retirement, he and his wife, Joann, moved to Ocala, Florida, then to Macon, Georgia. In 2011, they move Clayton, Georgia, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Kingsport and Clayton. Bill was a member of the Clayton First United Methodist Church where he served on the staff parish committee and other capacities. Bill enjoyed his time with his son as a Boy Scout troop leader in Kingsport. He enjoyed sailing, fishing, travel, and writing. He co-edited Patches of the Quilt: True Stories from a Children’s Home. Bill also wrote numerous short stories and poems, including the poem “A Moon Dance Thing” to celebrate the recent eclipse.

Bill was always one to make friends wherever life led him. Most important to Bill was his family for which he held a great and never-ending love. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Joann, his son Mark (Christina), granddaughter Rebecca, his brother Edwin (Carol), and twenty-four nieces and nephews, and many cousins.

A memorial service well be held for Bill on Saturday, May 11th, at Clayton First United Methodist Church, 71 South Main Street, Clayton, GA 30525. Visitation with the family will begin at 1pm in the church sanctuary with the service to begin at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Bill’s memory to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.

Mary Jean Barber

JANUARY 17, 1936 ~ MAY 3, 2019

Mary Jean Hopper Barber, age, 83 of Rabun Gap, Ga., passed away May 3, 2019. She was born January 17, 1936, the daughter of the late LD and Kate Ledford Hopper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Barber; brother, Bruce Hopper.

She is survived by two sons, Jay Barber of Atlanta, GA., Kirk Barber (Penny) of Griffin, GA., one daughter Chrislee Barber Carden (Kevin) of Hapeville, GA., two grandchildren Blake Chapman Barber and Caroline Grace Barber.

Jean was a member of Betty’s Creek Baptist Church. She was employed as a teacher with the Fulton County School System, where she taught chemistry, physical science, and earth science. She was a past president of the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She also spent time working as an accountant. Jean was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends on Sunday May 5, 2019 at the Beck Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday May 6, 2019 in the Chapel of the Beck Funeral Home with Rev. Don Samples officiating. Interment will follow at Rabun Memory Park.
