John Cornell Gullett, 82, of Rabun Gap, GA, passed away on Monday January 27, 2020 at Mountain View Health Care Center.
Born December 29, 1937 in Anderson, TN, he was the son of the late Jewells Gullett and Dorthey Gullett. He lived most of his life in Rabun County and worked as a boy scout ranger for Camp Rainey Mountain and he was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of Tiger Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Gullett and by his parents, Jewells and Dorthey Gullett. He is survived by two sons, Mark Gullett of Eden, NC and Stephen Gullett of Rabun Gap, GA, by a sister, Patricia Rezentes of Tennessee and also by four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family is at their respective residences.

Barbara Louetta Cannon Jenkins: Obituary

Barbara Louetta Cannon Jenkins, age 82, of Dillard, Georgia, passed away on January 26, 2020.

 

Barbara was the daughter of the late Irvin Cannon and the late Bessie Swafford Cannon on July 21, 1937. Barbara was known for her love of flowers. Her children and grandchildren meant everything to her. She passed on her knowledge of canning, sewing and many other life skills to them. In her professional life she worked as a seamstress for Clayburn Manufacturing.

 

In addition to her parents, one brother, Carl Leroy Cannon; two sisters, Inez Hardy and Jackie Houck, preceded her in death.

 

She leaves behind her loving husband, Gordon Jenkins, of the home; one son, Bobby Hamilton (Michelle), of Satolah, Georgia; four daughters, Marlene Anderson, of Clayton, Carol Owens, of Anderson, SC, Anita Hamilton, of Rabun Gap, Kim McKay (Ricky), of Clayton; one brother, Tommy Cannon of Smyrna, Georgia; one sister, Wilma Jean Trusty of Mountain City; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren also survive her.

 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday January 28, 2020 at the Beck Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

 

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday January 29, 2020 in the Chapel of the Beck Funeral Home at 11:00 am with Rev. Gabe Southards officiating.

 

Interment will follow the service in the Rabun Memory Park.

Lloyd Sylvia “Buck” Craig: Obituary

Lloyd Sylvia “Buck” Craig, age 88, of Clayton. GA passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at his home surrounded by family and friends. Buck was born December 4, 1931 in Rabun County and was the son of the late Ina Cleo Holcombe Craig and Virgil Columbus Craig of the Bridge Creek Community.

He was a veteran of the United States Army of the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Alaska. He loved the outdoors and spent his free time hunting, fishing and camping. He was a carpenter and a member of Battle Branch Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Ina Craig, by five brothers, L.E. Craig, Wilford Craig, Jess Craig, James Craig and George Craig and by five sisters, Gladys Craig, Myrtle Caudell, Nora Bingham, Ive Lee and Evelyn Alley.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Gipson Craig of the home, a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lawanda Craig of Clayton, GA,a brother, Jack Craig of Otto, NC, sisters, Leo Smiley of Bryson City, NC and Ruth Parker of Loganville, GA. Two granddaughters, Jessica Welch (Andrew) and Jan Bader (Kyle), two grandsons, Will Craig and Garrett Craig and three great grandchildren, Brendalyn Welch, Jake Bader and Brooklyn Bader also survive.

The body is at Hunter Funeral Home where the family will receive friends at the Eastside Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 from 12:00 noon until 1:00pm (the funeral hour).
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at 1:00pm at the Eastside Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with Rev. Madison McCrackin, Rev. Jewell Gaines, and Jack Craig officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Grove Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the Pruitt Hospice Nursing Staff for their compassion and care for Buck during his illness and family, friends and community for the prayers, calls and food during this time.

Franco C. Cintora, 74, of Rabun Gap, GA passed away Monday, January 27, 2020 at his home.
Born in Guanajuato, Mexico on July 26, 1945, he was the son of Guadalupe Cintora and Nicolasa Carmona Cintora. He was a carpenter and of the Catholic faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe and Nicolasa Cintora and a son, Socorro Cintora. He is survived by a Companion , Dessie Jane Gibson of Rabun Gap, GA, two sons, Tommy Welborn (Theresa) of Clayton, GA, Franco Cintora (Stonny) of Clayton, GA, two daughters, Ancella Chism(Robbie McCutchen) of Mountain City, GA, Nicolasa Watson (Tony) of Rabun Gap, GA, one brothers, Trinidad Cintora , a sister, Isidra Cintora Gomez of Mexico. Twelve grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren also survive.
The body is at Hunter Funeral Home where the family will receive friends on Wednesday January 29, 2020 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Eastside Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home.

Jack Elmer Bradshaw, 83, of Clayton, GA passed away Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA.
Born September 20, 1936 in Towns County, GA ,he was the son of the late Clinton Bradshaw and Corrie Eller. He was a self-employed carpenter and was a United States Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Sue English Bradshaw and his parents, Clinton and Corrie Bradshaw, a brother, Elbert Verlon Bradshaw and by a sister, Leona Tyler.
He is survived by four daughters, Sharon Bradshaw Vinson (Bobby), Marlene Defoor, Rita Bradshaw and Janet Bradshaw Bush (Joey), all of Clayton, GA, by two brothers, Alvin Bradshaw and Grady Bradshaw of Clayton, GA. Ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive.
The body is at Hunter Funeral Home where the family will receive friends and family on Monday, January 27, 2020 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 1:00pm at the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with Rev. Joe McCrackin officiating. Burial to follow at Persimmon Cemetery.

Luther Julius Evans Jr: Obituary

Luther Julius Evans Jr., age 75, of Hartwell, Georgia, passed away on January 22, 2020.

 

Luther was born the son of the late Luther Julius Evans Sr. and Clessie Ellenburg Evans on December 31, 1944. Luther was a Christian and a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca, South Carolina and an honorary member of the Abundant Life Church in Hartwell, Georgia. In his professional career Luther worked for Duke Power, as a pipe fitter. He was an avid fan of all sports and a huge supporter of the Clemson Tigers. He enjoyed being outdoors as well, and enjoyed spending time fishing.

 

In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by, one son, Anthony Evans;  one grandson, Josh Evans; one sister, Evelyn Patterson.

 

In addition to his mother, his survivors include his loving companion of thirty years, Ruth Shirley; two sons, Scotty Evans, of Seneca, South Carolina, Mark Evans, of Seneca, South Carolina; his brother, Kenneth Evans, of Rock Hill, South Carolina; brother in law, Bo Patterson; his sister, Carol Holland, of Seneca, South Carolina; six grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren also survive him.

 

The family will receive friends on Saturday January 25, 2020 at the Beck Funeral Home from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.

 

A funeral service will be held on Saturday January 25, 2020 in the Chapel of the Beck Funeral Home at 2:00 pm with Rev. Michael Rogers officiating.

 

Burial will follow the service in the Oconee Memorial Cemetery in Seneca, South Carolina.

Two arrested on trafficking methamphetamine charges

RABUN COUNTY, GA – Rabun County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) conducted a traffic strop for a defective windshield on Ga. 15/US 441 and Tiger Connector Road, which led to the discovery of one pound of methamphetamine.

RCSO Deputy Brandon Hyer initiated the traffic stop for a busted windshield in a black 2006 Ford F150 pickup truck. During the stop, a search of the vehicle occurred which uncovered four bags suspected to contain drugs.

Deputies took Joshua Arnold,36, and Misty Hicks,33, of Mountain City, Tenn. into custody on several charges. Arnold was arrested on three charges a windshield violation, one count of trafficking methamphetamine, and one count of possession/use of drug-related objects. Hicks was arrested on one count of trafficking methamphetamine and one count of possession/use of drug-related objects. Both subjects were transported to the Rabun County Detention Center.

Bond hasn’t been set as of Jan. 15 for either Arnold or Hicks. In the United States, all are innocent until proven guilty.

Arnold from Mountain City, Tenn. was arrested on trafficking meth charges.

Misty Hicks was in the vehicle with Arnold and also arrested for trafficking.

Emma Sue Free Thurmond: Obituary

Emma Sue Free Thurmond, age 75, of Rabun Gap, GA passed away on January 17, 2020 with her family by her side. She was born February 20, 1944 the daughter of the late Harvie D. and Susie Wilson Free.

 

In addition to her parents Emma Sue was preceded in death by one son, Matthew Thurmond; one Grandson Casey Thurmond.

 

She is survived by her husband, Charles Thurmond of Rabun Gap, GA; two sons, Charles Christopher (Marly) Thurmond of Rabun Gap, GA., Eric Clifford (Jennifer) Thurmond of Commerce, GA; three brothers, Terry (Deborah) Free of Toccoa, GA, Tim (Ann) Free of Tiger, GA, Tony (Lynn) Free of Tiger, GA; seven grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

 

She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Wolffork Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Rabun County High School class of 1962 and attended trade school and studied Stenography. Both Emma Sue and Charles worked for the FBI in Washington, DC for two and a half years. Then Charles entered the Army and they lived in different locations as he was moved from different bases, until Charles was deployed to Vietnam. Emma Sue enjoyed taking care of children and family; she enjoyed traveling, fishing and was also a great cook. She was a member of Georgia Tribe Eastern Cherokee State Recognized, and was an officer in the DAV Chapter 15 Auxiliary. She was a member of the Native American Warrior Society Auxiliary and delivered food to needy families in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Emma Sue was very involved with her church for many years until her health kept her from participating.

 

The family will receive friends on January 19, 2020 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Funeral Service will be held 2:00 PM January 20, 2020 at Wolffork Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Barker officiating. Interment will follow in the Wolffork Baptist Church Cemetery.

Herbert Donald Talley Jr: Obituary

Herbert Donald Talley Jr., age 61 of Clayton, GA passed away January 11, 2020.

 

Herbert was born in Highlands, NC the son of the late Herbert and Doris Anders Talley. He was a self professed Jack of all trades and a mast of none; however that was not exactly true. He was a carpenter and work for Schmitt builders for 40 years. He attended trade school and was certified as a gunsmith, and as small engine repair specialist. He enjoyed spending time with his best friend Becky and family. Herbert enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing.

 

He is survived by three sons, Mark Talley of Satolah, Ryan Talley of Clayton, Grady Talley of Habersham; two brothers, Roy Talley and Tim Talley both of Clayton, two sisters Patsy Pulido and Susie Owens both of Otto; four grandchildren, Daisy Talley, lilly Talley, Brayden Talley and Alyssa Talley.

 

The family will have a celebration of life at a later date.

Clinton Alexander “Alex” Roane: Obituary

Clinton Alexander “Alex” Roane, 86, of Clayton, GA passed at his home with family at his side.

 

Alex was born the son of the late Lewis Edward Roane and Martha Elizabeth Justus Roane. He was a lifelong resident of Rabun County. Alex graduated from Rabun County High School and attended The University of Georgia where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Masters Degree. While attending the University he played on the UGA Baseball team. He served in the US Army where he obtained the Rank of 2 LT. Alex was a former member of Lions Club. He was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Psi (Professional Business Fraternity) and was a volunteer Fireman for many years. He was an educator and was director of pupil personal services. He loved the children and they loved him. He made a lasting impression in their lives. He and his wife are members of Battle Branch Baptist Church.

 

In addition to his parents Alex was preceded in death by three brothers, Tom Roane, Joe Roane, and Lewis Roane; two step-sons Winfred Speed and William Speed.

 

Alex is survived by his wife, Betty White Speed Roane, of the home; two daughters, Julia Roane Butler (Don) of Broxton, GA, Tracy Roane Thompson of Cleveland, GA; one special daughter, Vicki Tyler of Mountain City, GA; one son, Greg Roane of Tiger, GA 30525; one sister Sue Roane Duckworth of Plum Branch, SC; four grandchildren, Marcey Glass (David) of Cleveland, GA, Clint D Roane (Sherry) of  Stone Mountain, GA, Geoff Butler of Monterey, CA, Colby Roane of Muskegon, MI; 2 great-grandsons, Tristin Glass, Ashton Glass; three great-granddaughters, Grace Roane Addison Roane, Ella Roane and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

 

The family will receive friend on Friday January 17, 2020 at Battle Branch Baptist Church from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.

William “Bill” Crumley: Obituary

William “Bill” Crumley, age 83, of Rabun Gap, Georgia, passed away on January 15, 2020.

Bill was born the son of the late Lloyd Joseph Crumley and the late Virginia Ramey on January 16, 1936 in Habersham County, Georgia. Bill lived in Clarkesville, Georgia and Wiley, Georgia before moving to Rabun Gap. He was a member of the Wiley Presbyterian Church for 73 years, and had recently still served as church treasurer and church elder. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was a true outdoorsman, and loved to spend his free time fishing and hunting. In his professional life he worked for the Georgia Power Company as a land surveyor, he had also spent time working for the Georgia Department of Transportation. He served his community as a teacher and mentor to children, and was a counselor at Camp Dixie. He was a dirt track racer, and enjoyed working on cars as well as traveling, and had been on over 55 cruises. He was the person responsible for surveying the line that Wallenda used when he tight rope walked across the Tallulah Gorge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Ricky Crumley and Johnnie Sue Crumley.

His survivors include his wife, Sharon Crumley; three stepsons, Jack Read, Denny Read, Chris Read; one daughter, Lea Owens (Clint); one brother,  Joe Crumley (June); three nieces and nephews, David Crumley, Hope Murray and Kenneth Crumley; one grandson, Ryan Dixon

The family will receive friends on Monday January, 20, 2020 at the Beck Funeral Home from 10:00 am until 11:00 am.

A memorial service will be held on Monday January, 20, 2020 in the Chapel of the Beck Funeral Home at 11:00 am with Pastor Denny Read officiating.

Carroll Dean Burrell, age 60, affectionately known as “Dean” passed away on January 11, 2020 at his residence.

He was born on November 11, 1959 in Clayton, Georgia to the late Walter and Lula Greene Burrell. He was a carpenter by trade and of Christian faith.

He is preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and one sister. His survivors include his former wife and best friend Sandra Burrell of Clayton, Georgia, two sons, Jason Dean Burrell (Becky) of Clayton, Georgia and Andrew Bryan Burrell (Laurie) of Dillard, Georgia, two brothers, Rev. Thomas Burrell (Susan) of Clayton, GA., and Glenn Burrell of Clayton, GA., along with five grandchildren, Carigan Burrell, Alonna Gibson, Nathaniel Burrell, Dillon Burrell, and Makayla Burrell.

The body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on January 19, 2020 at Peoples Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Joe McCrackin.

Mary Lorraine Hamby Corbin: Obituary

Mary Lorraine Hamby Corbin, age 75, of Clayton, Georgia passed away on January 10, 2020.

 

She was born the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Hamby and Ruby Williams Hamby on March 3, 1944. In her professional life she worked for Empire Manufacturing for 35 years. Throughout her life her children and grandchildren were always the most important thing, and she always loved spending time with them. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband, the late Mr. Earl Corbin. She was a great cook but was especially adept at baking, especially her cakes. She was an avid Duke Basketball fan, and was always faithful in supporting her children in sports and never missed a game. In her retirement she was a caregiver to a number of Rabun County residents, when she and her favorite Aunt Ruth Barnes were not out on an adventure. She would always say that she was blessed with wonderful neighbors. She was a Christian and attended the Clayton Baptist Church.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Jeff Matheson.

 

Her survivors include her son, Tim Matheson (Kristi), of Clayton; her daughter, Lisa Bonnette, of Clayton; her brother, Richard Hamby, of Clayton; six grandchildren, Zachary Coleman, Justin Bonnette, Charles Bonnette, Barclay Matheson, Breanna Mathson, Brittany Spivey; four great-grandchildren, also survive her.

 

The family will receive friends on Sunday January 12, 2020 at the Beck Funeral Home from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm.

 

A funeral will be held on Sunday January 12, 2020 in the Chapel of the Beck Funeral Home at 3:00 pm with Rev. Jim Carver officiating.

Steven Robert Luster: Obituary

Steven Robert Luster, age 60, of Clayton, Ga., passed away January 3, 2020. He was the son of the late Robert A. and Jewell Ellen Jarrard Luster.

 

He was a Master Mason and was Past Master of Rabun Gap Lodge 265. He was also member of Scottish Rite Valley of Atlanta, and a shriner, a member of The Yaarab Temple of Atlanta. He worked with the Department of Corrections for many years. Steve then worked as a building contractor.  In addition to his family and friends, he also enjoyed car racing and loved the Georgia Bulldogs.

 

He is survived by his two daughters Erin Luster Gaglio (Paul) of Clayton, Ga., Sarah Luster (Logan Carnes) of Lakemont, Ga., two sisters Susan Buchanan (Paul) of Clayton, and Betsy Nichols of Clayton Ga., and four grandchildren Wyatt Queen, Madisyn Queen, Hayden Hall and Landon Carnes.

 

The family will receive friends on Wednesday January 8, 2020 at Beck Funeral Home from 11am until 1pm. A Memorial Service will follow at 1pm in the Beck Funeral Home Chapel with Mike McCoy and Rev. Kelsie Chiara officiating. Committal services will follow at Rabun Memory Park with Masonic Rites.

Wanetta Queen, age 64, passed away on January 10, 2020 at Mountain View Health Center in Clayton, Georgia.

She was born on February 19, 1956 in Clayton, Georgia to the late Paul and Leona Redden Queen. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith and a member of Blue Heights Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Paul Queen Jr., Chester Queen, and Calvin Queen, and three sisters, Katherine Kilby and Martha Lee and Vassie Worley. Her survivors include her brothers, Charles Queen and Hudson Queen both of Clayton, Georgia and her sisters, Barbara Taylor of Rabun Gap, Georgia and Patsy Osheilds of New York.

The body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held on a later date.
