Flash Flood Watch Continues into tonight across Rabun

RABUN COUNTY, Ga – The flash flood watch continues until 12:00 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 7 with the flash flood warning in effect until 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Showers and a possible thunderstorm are forecast by the National Weather Service (NWS) with a high of 65 degrees and a southwest wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. There’s a 90 percent chance of precipitation and rainfall amounting to between a quarter and half of an inch.

This evening expect more of the same and a low around 36 degrees, plus a south southwest wind of 5 to 14 mph becoming west after midnight. The winds could gust as high as 22 mph. The chance of precipitation drops to 80 percent and could be around a quarter and half of an inch of new rainfall.

Heavy rainfall can lead to landslides and mudslides in the area, use caution if traveling today. Also be prepared to take alternate routes due to rivers rising out of their banks. Anyone who lives on a mountain or nearby should be prepared to as quickly as possible if conditions worsen.

The NWS also reports “colder, but drier, conditions will develop behind the front through Friday. A swiftly moving system will cross the region on Saturday, before dry high pressure sets up by Sunday. Another moist cold front will approach the area slowly from the west during the early to middle part of next week.”

Rabun County Schools has cancelled 21^st Century After School programs for today. Unclear at this time, if they will go on a delay tomorrow, Feb. 7 or not.
